One of the fastest growing hobbies in the United States is the collection of vintage gas signs. These are hot collectibles and they are a great piece of Americana. People collecting these signs can see prices starting at around $200. These signs are probably much more respected today than they were in days gone by. This is because collectors recognize the artistry, skill, and craftsmanship that went into the making of each sign.
The vintage gas signs of yesterday were basically quite simplistic. This was because there was much less competition among consumers. The slogans on these signs were basically simple as well as straight forward. This is in contrast to today's advertisement that attempts to stuff everything possible into a small amount of space. The older signs were very colorful. The gas companies often shared a quiet competition in seeing which business could design the most colorful and unique sign.
Most of the old signs were made from metal or tin. The gas companies used these basically for advertising. Some of the popular companies, such as Penzoil and Quaker State, are sought after by many collectors today. Most collectors realize that each one of these antique signs has a special story behind it.
